Endoscopy means looking inside and refers to looking inside the human body for medical reasons. Endoscopy is also used in situations such as the inspection of nuclear fuel elements, where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible.) |
|
| |
The endoscopy unit provides diagnostic procedures for conditions of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, including surveillance for cancer, ulcers, polyps, and irritable bowel syndrome. |

Paul Swain and Gabi Iddan independently in 1996 presented data of a wireless camera sending Images from the innards of an animal. The first clinical trial in patients with occult GI bleeding was initiated in the year 2000, and was approved by US FDA. |

Indications of Use
It is extremely useful test to diagnose small bowel diseases like,
|
|
| |
| » |
Occult GI bleed, where Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are normal |
| » |
Overt GI bleed, with normal Upper and Lower GI endoscopy exams. |
| » |
Detect small bowel involvement in case of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Crohn's disease). |
| » |
Small bowel involvement of NSAIDs induced ulcers, small bowel neoplasms, and vascular lesions. |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Diagnostic Sensitivity |
|
| |
Capsule endoscopy identifies specific pathology of the small bowel like ulcer, vascular lesion, tumours in approximately 90% of difficult cases whereas all combined competing methods miss specific pathology of the small bowel in 65-85%.
The advent of double balloon endoscopy of small bowel promoted by Yomomoto has offered us the option to biopsy and treat lesions demonstrated by endoscopy. Mulder et al presented a paper at Digestive Disease Week (DDW 2005) emphasizing that capsule endoscopy and double balloon endoscopy ate complementary, not competing methods. |

| |
Capsule Retention |
|
| |
The risk of capsule retention in healthy volunteer is zero. Capsule retention occurs in about 1.4%. Capsule can be retrieved later either by endoscopy ar at surgery. |

Capsule Endoscopy in cases of NON SMALL BOWEL Diseases |

Its use is extended for visualization of esophagus, for screening of erosions, ulcers, Barrets esophagus and for screening of varices in patients of cirrhosis of liver. |
